Project Summary

Nettles Construction Solutions completed a gas pipe abandonment project in the Argosy area in Riverside, Missouri, using Low-Density Cellular Concrete (LDCC). The work involved multiple pipe segments, long pumping distances, and schedule changes during the course of the project.

One of the most notable achievements of this project was completing a 5,500-linear-foot run of 8-inch pipe in a single day without the use of plasticizer, demonstrating the flowability and performance of the LDCC mix, as well as the crew’s expertise in planning and execution.

The Problem

The project involved filling an 8-inch abandoned gas pipe with approximately 129 cubic yards of LDCC. The material was designed at 42 ± 3 pcf with a minimum 28-day compressive strength of 300 psi. 

The scope included several pipe segments: 

  • Segment 1 – 1,534 LF  
  • Segment 2 – 7,060 LF  
  • Segment 3 – 752 LF  
  • Segment 4 – 658 LF


Because of its length, the 7,060 LF segment had to be divided into two runs. The project also experienced schedule changes, including delays related to permit coordination, which required flexibility and close communication throughout the job. 

Gas pipe abandonment work like this requires careful planning around pumping distance, setup locations, mobilizations, and changing field conditions. This planning helps to keep the jobsite safe and accessible during and after the project.
